“If You Don't Like the Style/Genre, Don't Review It. The point of a review is to give critique of the material on the album, as it pertains within it's genre. If you aren't into the genre, don't fucking rate it.” – BadFist from RYM, for their review on The Blessed Hellride.
I can understand this mindset. If a review is for the reader’s value, then it makes sense the reviewer should be someone who is into the genre being reviewed, who is interested in it, who wants to see the best in it, and can pass their opinion down to similarly minded readers with similar taste.
But, I have a few counterparts.
1. I don’t write reviews for readers. I write them for myself, and share them because someone somewhere out there might enjoy them.
2. I am a reader as well, and I write exactly the kind of reviews I like to read.
3. I go into every album with good faith and interest, even among genres I don’t like.
4. Sometimes, the opinion of someone discussing music outside their preferred genres can be even more interesting to read than someone within the fanbase.
I say all that because I am the person BadFist is talking about. Why? Well, because I’ve heard all of Black Label Society’s previous albums and didn’t find any of them that incredible. And despite loving Metal with all my heart, Southern Metal is easily one of my least favorite genres in the tree so far. So, why am I reviewing this?

Zakk Wylde의 인생에서 최고의 명반은 Ozzy Osbourne과 함께한 시절 만들어낸 앨범인 No More Tears라고 생각한다. 하지만, 가장 Zakk Wylde스러운 앨범을 꼽으라고하면 Black Label Society의 이름으로 만들어낸 The Blessed Hellride라고 할 것이다. 본작은 Zakk Wylde하면 생각나는 모든 것을 담아냈다. 그는 록메탈 기타리스트들 중에서도 힘이 넘치는 연주자로 유명한데, 화려함보다는 묵직한 힘을 뚝심있게 밀고나가는 그의 연주가 진가를 발휘하고 있다. 그도 수려하면서도 멜로딕한 연주를 할 수 있는 기량은 충분히 갖추고 있는데, Black Label Society에서는 그러한 성향을 거의 드러내지 않는다. 그저 그의 이미지에 걸맞는 강력한 힘이 실려있는 그루브한 연주로 일관하고 있다. 앨범에서 가장 주목받는 곡은 Ozzy Osbourne이 피처링 해준 Stillborn이 가장 많이 언급되곤 하는데, 개인적으로는 그다지 인상깊게 들은 곡은 아니다. 그저 그의 후견인 노릇하던 Ozzy Osbourne이 참여했구나하는 정도지 특별히 감흥이 있는 곡은 아니었다. 개인적으로는 그다운 마초이즘이 연주부분에서는 잔잔한 형태로 표출되고 있는 타이틀 곡이나, 비감 서린 Blackened Waters를 가장 인상깊게 들었다. 그러나 사실 이 앨범에는 특별히 킬링 트랙이 존재한다는 생각은 들지 않는다. 전곡이 ... 간단히 말하자면 졸라 남자다운 헤비메탈 앨범이다. 잭 와일드하면 떠오르는 거친 이미지가 있는데 그 매력이 그대로 다 드러나는 적나라한 사운드가 일품이다. 사실 잭 와일드라고 해서 개인적으로 이 사람의 기타 특징을 잘 알고있던것은 아니다. 사실 아직 잭 와일드가 참여한 앨범중 가지고 있는 앨범은 이거 하나뿐이고 오지오스본 앨범에서도 아직 접한적도 없다. 하지만 그 외모에서 풍겨나오는 카리스마, 이럴것 같은 사운드다 하는 잭 와일드만의 스타일이 이 앨범에서도 잘 나타나고 있는듯하다. 거칠기도 하지만 나름 기름진 기타리프는 순수한 헤비메탈 사운드에도 가까워 순도 높은 헤비메탈을 추구하는 팬들이라면 들어볼만한 앨범이다. 보컬 수준또한 수준급이며 이런 가다듬어지지 않은 보컬또한 이런 앨범에는 오히려 더욱 잘 어울리는듯 하며 3번 트랙에서는 오지오스본이 피처링 하기도 하였다.

Black Label Society을 가장 잘 들어내준 앨범은 바로 이 The Blessed Hellride 앨범이 아닐까 싶다. 이 앨범을 들어 보신 사람들은 아시겠지만, 3번 트랙이 매우 강력하다.
이전 앨범인 1919 Eternal를 보면 알겠지만 잭 와일드가 오지오스본에 있을 때보다 성숙해진 걸 알 수있다. 1919 Eternal 앨범은 로버트 트루질로도 참여한 것으로 되어 있다. 라이브 영상을 보면 로버트 트루질로가 나오는 것을 알 수 있다.
잭 와일드의 헤비함을 한 번에 느끼고 싶다면 이 앨범을 강력 추천한다.
이 밴드는 오지오스본 시절의 사운드와는 확연히 다르다. 더욱 헤비해졋다고 하면 좋을까. ( 스틸본 이란 곡을 들어보면 절규의 목소리와 함께 헤비한 사운드가 들려오는 것을 느낄 수 있다. )
어쨋든 잭 와일드의 솔로기타를 느낄 수 있는 좋은 기회작품이다.

Zakk Wylde redefines what Heavy Metal genre should have and would have missed. Virtuoso showoff skills, ruthless brutality... who does need it anyway? Just cling to the basic. Sometimes we overlook too much things held by the strain says us be always fresh.

잭와일드식 메탈의 진수. 의외로 현란하기보단 묵직한 기타플레이가 맘에든다. 거칠게 씹어내는 보컬도 일품. 중간의 발라드도 매력적이며 전곡이 킬링트랙이다.
