2017년에 발표된 The Source는 Arjen Lucassen이 이끄는 프로그레시브 메탈 프로젝트 Ayreon의 야심찬 작품 중 하나로, 그의 방대한 SF 세계관의 기원을 다루는 프리퀄 앨범이다. Ayreon 특유의 멀티 보컬 시스템과 오페라적 구성은 여전하며, Arjen Lucassen은 이번에도 수많은 유명 보컬리스트와 연주자들을 기용해 풍성하고도 정교한 사운드 세계를 만들어냈다. 이 앨범은 기존 팬들에게는 익숙한 구성과 스타일이지만, 그 안에서 여전히 신선함과 역동성을 찾아낼 수 있다. 음악적으로 The Source는 Ayreon 특유의 헤비하고 웅장한 프로그레시브 메탈을 중심에 두되, 포크, 클래식, 일렉트로닉 요소까지 유기적으로 결합한다. 특히 Everybody Dies 같은 곡에서는 유쾌하면서도 혼란스러운 디스토피아적 에너지가 인상적으로 표현되며, 각 보컬리스트의 개성이 명확히 드러난다. 복잡한 구조 속에서도 멜로디는 명료하게 살아 있으며, 한 편의 SF 오페라를 듣는 듯한 몰입감을 제공한다. 보컬 라인업은 말 그대로 드림 팀이다. Ayreon hodnotím dosť vysoko v prog. štýle a dlhodobo ich aj sledujem. Pritom moje spoznávanie kapely bolo v minulosti dosť vlažne a nič nenasvedčovalo tomu, že si ich v budúcnosti takto obľúbim. Ayreon je o výbornej hudbe a špičkových hlasoch od hosťujúcich spevákov/speváčok, zároveň o pestrosti, pričom sú aj ľahko rozpoznateľní (má svoj štýl). Svoj Prog. Metal dopĺňa o folkové, elektronické a rock -ové prvky, čím hudba stále dokáže baviť a prechádzať cez rôzne nálady.
Arjen Anthony Lucassen opäť spolupracuje so svojím dvorným bubeníkom - Ed Warby (ex-Gorefest, ex-Vuur, ex-Hail of Bullets). Zároveň okrem tvorby hudby má na starosti rôzne hudobné nástroje, ako aj produkciu albumu (konkrétne 2 CD-čka).
Album podporilo veľké množstvo známych vokalistov: Tobias Sammet (Avantasia, Edguy), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), James LaBrie (Dream Theater), Tommy Karevik (Kamelot, Seventh Wonder), Simone Simons (Epica), Floor Jansen (Nightwish), Russell Allen (Symphony X, Allen - Lande, Adrenaline Mob), Nils K. This is another masterpiece by great Dutch genius Arjen Anthony Lucassen, who simply refuses to disappoint his fan base. This double-album delivers everything Ayreon fans had been hoping for. "The Source" is full of great vocalists, almost all of whom have previously worked with Arjen on at least one occasion. It features Ayreon’s usual blend of Prog. Rock/Metal, folk and electronics, with more guitar riffs than usual.

08년도 01011001의 프리퀄인 본 작품 또한 명성에 걸맞는 기발한 이야기를 이어나가며,
Ayreon 특유의 대체 불가능한, 단순 청취가 아닌 체험하는듯한 지적 경험은 여전히 진한 감동으로 다가온다.
