상당히 이색적인 시도를 한 Apocalyptica의 데뷔 앨범. 그 시도가 성공했는지는 솔직히 의문이지만, 기존 음악과는 궤를 달리하는 독특한 실험을 했다는 점에서는 높이 평가한다. 누가 첼로만으로 Heavy Metal 연주를 하겠다는 괴짜같은 짓을 하겠는가. 그런데 Apocalyptica라는 이름을 내건 4인의 핀란드 젊은이들은 괴상한 짓을 저질러 버렸다. 이들의 실험정신에는 박수를 보내는 바이다. 그러나 음악적 모험이라는 시각을 떠나 이 앨범을 바라보면, 이들의 의도가 성공했는지는 논란의 여지가 있다. 시각에 따라서는 이 앨범은 형편없는 작품으로 평가할 수도 있다. 첼로에 맞지도 않는 헤비 메탈 연주를 한다고 실제로 혹평하는 이도 상당히 많다. 게다가 이들이 커버하고 있는 밴드는 다름아닌 Metallica다. Metallica는 당연히 Thrash Metal 밴드이니 만큼 격렬한 음악이 주를 이루고 있다. 이들이 커버하고 있는 곡들 중에서도 Master Of Puppets와 Creeping Death는 유난히 첼로 연주와 어울리지 못하고 있다. 반면에 Enter Sandman이나 The Unforgiven 같은 곡은 상대적으로 더 좋게 들린다. 이것은 과연 첼로라는 악기가 가진 한계로 치부해야하는 걸까. 개인적으로는 그것보다 리듬 섹션의 부재로 인해 이 앨범이 심심하게 들리지 않나 싶다. 드럼과 베이스 없이 메 ...
