Anthrax의 1998년작 Volume 8: The Threat Is Real은 여러모로 실험과 혼란, 그 사이의 밴드 정체성을 탐색하던 시기의 결과물이다. John Bush가 보컬을 맡은 두 번째 풀렝스 앨범으로, 밴드는 전작 Stomp 442에서 이어진 헤비 그루브 스타일을 유지하면서도, 보다 다양한 장르적 색채를 도입했다. 하지만 이러한 다양성은 때때로 앨범의 방향성을 흐트러뜨렸고, 명확한 정체성보다는 다 해보려다 산만해진 인상을 남긴다. 앨범 곳곳에는 여전히 Anthrax 특유의 날카로운 리프와 박진감 있는 드러밍이 살아 있지만, 그것이 앨범 전체를 지탱할 만큼 강력하게 일관되지는 않는다. 몇몇 트랙은 비교적 집중력 있는 구성과 폭발적인 에너지를 담고 있지만, 지나치게 장난스럽거나 장르 실험에 치우친 트랙들은 앨범의 긴장감을 떨어뜨린다. 이런 식의 기조는 밴드의 유연함을 보여주는 동시에, 당시의 불안정한 정체성을 방증하는 요소로도 해석된다. 프로덕션 측면에서도 앨범은 다소 러프하게 들린다. 드럼과 기타가 다소 답답하게 믹스되어 있고, John Bush의 보컬은 곡에 따라 설득력의 편차가 있다. 갑자기 바뀐 4인체제에도 불구하고 빡센 사운드를 들려준다. crush에서 멋지게 달려주시는건 좋았는데 Inside Out은 다임백이 참여했음에도 다소 심심한것 같다. 차라리 다임백이 참여한 또 다른 곡 Born Again Idiot에 한표를 더 주고 싶다. Killing Box에서는 뭐야? 앤스랙스식 인더스트리얼인가? 하는 느낌도 들었다. 그 뒤로는 계속 지루함의 연속.... 하지만 존부쉬 보컬은 적어도 쓰래쉬에 최적화된 목소리가 아닌가 한다.

Painfully boring album, it starts off okay enough with Crush and Catharsis but those are the only notable tracks in my opinion as the album goes way down hill from here, I zoned out throughout the entirety of listening to this album and it's just so fucking boring. Hell they even have songs that sounded country music. Are we serious country music from one of the big four of thrash metal? This makes no sense to me and honestly deserves all the hate it gets.

Yeah, it was their weakest album yet. It's not terrible, but its reputation is rather warranted. Mostly boring Groove Metal, a sad mix of humor and tough guy act.

Me costó mucho llegar a aceptar este trabajo, pero con las escuchas ha ganado mucho. Anthrax, menuda gran banda, tanto con Belladona como con Bush a la voz.

napriek tomu, že John Bush je kvalitný spevák a s pôvodnou skupinou Armored Saint nahral výborné albumy, do štýlu Anthrax veľmi nezapadol, aj keď to určite bolo spôsobené aj zmenou štýlu a zvuku. Štýl na albume je medzi: Grunge/Alternative/Groove metal
