Once Sent From the Golden Hall로 Melodic Death Metal씬에 성공적으로 데뷔한 Amon Amarth는 발표 직후 멤버 노선에 상당한 변동을 겪는다. 먼저 Anders Hansson이 Johan Soderberg로 교체되고, 드러머 Martin Lopez는 Progressive Metal 밴드 Opeth로 가버리고, Fredrik Andersson이 Amon Amarth에 합류한다. 이 라인업은 변동없이 현재까지 유지되고 있다. 데뷔 앨범 이후 멤버 구성이 바뀌었지만, Amon Amarth의 작품 활동에 별다른 지장이 생기거나 하지는 않았다. Viking Metal을 가미한 Amon Amarth식 멜로딕 데스 메탈의 본질은 조금도 훼손되지 않았다. 그도 그럴게 밴드의 메인 브레인인 Johan Hegg와 Olavi Mikkonen이 건재한 이상 밴드에 큰 문제가 생길 소지는 적었다. 전작에 이어 여전히 이들은 호쾌한 사운드의 멜로딕 데스 메탈을 들려 주고 있다. 다만 The Avenger는 약간의 발전 양상이라 할 수 있는 변화를 보이고 있다. 데뷔 앨범 Once Sent From the Golden Hall에서 멜로디가 부각된 면모를 보여주었다면, The Avenger는 일정 부분 변했다. 여전히 짜릿한 멜로디를 들려주고 있지만서도, 전작처럼 앨범 전면에 드러나 있기보다는 강력한 리프에 적절히 묻어내 좀더 성숙미 넘치는 연주를 들려주고 있다. 그 결과 멜로딕 데스 메탈 밴드들의 고질적인 문제점인 쉽게 질리는 약점을 밴드는 극복해냈다 ... 힘이 넘쳐흐르는 바이킹 전사들의 출정가같은 작품. 직선적인 리프들로 쭉쭉 밀고나가며 전진하는 사운드가 인상깊습니다. 전작에 비해 약간 밋밋해진 멜로디는 조금 아쉬운 대신, 더욱 스트레이트해지고 더욱 과감해진 진행, 그 직진성이 매우 돋보입니다. 항로를 바꾸지 않고, 바이킹 멜데스라는 한 우물만 파는 이 형님들에게 항상 무운이 함께 하기를 빕니다.

바이킹 데스라는 스타일을 확실하게 정립시킨 앨범. 하지만 상대적으로 복잡, 테크니컬하지 않은 스타일의 리프와 뻔한 분위기때문에 2집부터 약간 지루한 감이 없지않아 있다.
