Progressive Rock의 걸작 2112를 발표하기 전까지만 해도 Rush는 별볼일 없는 밴드에 지나지 않았다. 사실 퀄리티 면을 고려해봤을 때 이 표현은 무례하다고 할 수도 있지만, 그 당시 Rush의 인지도는 정말 별볼일 없었다. 이들은 거의 해산의 위기에 직면해 있었다. 2112 이전의 내리 발표한 세 장의 성적은 참담한 수준이었다. 밴드는 Caress of Steel을 발표할 때가 가장 위기의 순간이였다. 전작 Fly By Night에서도 프로그레시브 록적인 요소를 가미했지만, 본작에서는 이를 극단적으로 강화했다. 12분과 19분에 육박하는 대곡을 쓸때 Rush의 멤버들은 거의 될대로 되라는 심정이지 않았을까... 하지만, 이러한 도박은 여지없이 실패로 돌아갔다. 전반적으로 앨범의 전반부에 실린 곡들은 말할 것도 없이 훌륭한 퀄리티다. 그러나 문제는 역시 두 대곡에 있다. The Necromancer와 The Fountain of Lamneth는 분명 밴드의 대표곡 2112를 배태한 중요한 의의로 충만한 트랙이다. 하지만 난해함의 정도는 지독한 수준이었다. 특히 The Fountain of Lamneth가 그러하다. 지금은 잘 듣고 있기는 하지만, 이 곡을 끝까지 듣는 데에는 정말 많은 시간이 걸렸다. 이러한 대곡들을 듣는 데에는 원래 인내심이 필요하기는 하지만, 이 곡은 그 정도가 과도했다. 만약 이 곡을 만든 이가 Rush가 ... 러쉬의 세번째 앨범으로 미국에서 골드를 따내지못한 두 앨범중 하나라고 한다. 대중적인 실패와는 별개로 개인적으로는 1번 트랙 Bastille Day는 러쉬의 곡들중 무척 좋아하는곡중 하나다. 뭔가 혁명을 주도하는 그 비장한 각오가 잘 느껴진다고나 할까... 아무튼 좋다. 1,2,3번의 짧은 곡은 다 흥겹고 괜찮다.
대중적으로는 실패를 겪었지만 프로그래시브한 성향이 돋보이는 대곡의 4,5번 트랙은 이 다음앨범 2112가 어떻게 발생했는지를 이해할수 있게 해준다. 중간중간 다소 지루함이 느껴지는듯한 완성도의 부족은 약간 아쉽다.

분위기가 너무나 바뀐 앨범. 프로그레시브보단 Art Rock에 가깝다. 멤버들의 실력이야 당연히 뛰어나지만, 앨범 전체적으로 볼땐 심심한 느낌이다.
