음악을 듣다보면 나는 굉장히 좋아하는 작품인데, 그다지 평가가 좋지 않은 작품들을 종종 만나게 된다. Rage의 다섯 번째 앨범 Reflections of a Shadow가 내게 있어 그런 분류에 속하는 앨범이다. 개인적으로 이 앨범을 상당히 좋아하는데, 나중에 앨범에 대한 리뷰들을 보고 나서 팬들에게서 그저그런 반향을 이끌어낸 작품이라는 사실을 알고서 꽤 놀랐었다. 개인적인 호의를 떠나서 본작 Reflections of a Shadow는 Rage의 초기 작품들 중에서 중요한 의의를 가진 앨범은 결코 아니다. Rage 스타일을 본격적으로 정립시킨 Perfect Man이나 팬베이스를 유럽으로 확장한 Secrets in a Weird World에 비교하면 중요도 면에서 다소 떨어진다고 할 수 있다. 하지만 본작에서 들려주는 강렬한 Thrash Metal스러운 사운드에는 좋은 인상을 받았다. That's Human Bondage나 True Face In Everyone, Can't Get Out 같은 곡들에서 찾을 수 있는 강화된 에너지는 전작들을 들으면서 좀더 강력한 사운드였으면 좋겠다고 생각한 나같은 리스너의 입맛에는 딱 맞아들어갔다. 하지만 이러한 요소 때문에 흥행에는 실패하게 되는데, 주 이유로는 스래쉬 메탈적인 요소 때문에 멜로디 라인이 묻혔다는 사실이다. 즉, 팬들이 생각하는 Rage의 이미지와 당시 밴드가 하고 싶었던 음악의 방향이 일치하지 ... 90년작인 이 앨범은 명반과는 꽤나 거리가있고 레이쥐 자신들조차 만족 하지 못한 앨범이다. 이는 다음작인 Trapped!에서 굉장히 다른방향으로 업그레이한 모습을 보여주는 계기가 되기도 했는데.. 비장미 쩌는 Dust는 소위 판이 닳도록 자주 들었던 중반기 레이쥐의 명곡이라 할만하다.
