캐나다는 분명 80년대에 Heavy Metal이 크게 세력을 떨친 국가는 아니었다. 그래서 이곳 출신 밴드들에는 그다지 관심을 기울이지 않았었는데, 최근 몇몇 밴드를 접하면서 이러한 인식을 고치게 되었다. Kick Axe는 Anvil과 함께 Canadian Heavy Metal에 대한 관심을 불러일으킨 밴드로 최근에 잘 듣고 있는 밴드중 하나다. 이들의 작품은 데뷔 앨범인 Vices부터 들었는데 강력한 리프와 질주감 넘치는 전개, 치밀한 구성 등 여러모로 호평할 부분이 많은 수작이라고 생각된다. 앨범의 포문을 여는 Heavy Metal Shuffle부터 모든 곡들이 갓 데뷔 앨범을 발표한 밴드의 작품이라고 하기에는 믿을 수 없을 정도로 굉장히 높은 수준으로 제작되었다. Vices는 80년대 캐나디언 헤비 메탈의 수준을 낮게 봤던 것을 반성하지 않을 수 없게 하는 구석이 있다. 앨범의 높은 완성도에 걸맞게 평론가와 헤비 메탈 팬들로부터 본작은 상당히 높은 평가를 받아냈다. 물론 국내에서 본작은 별다른 반향을 이끌어내지는 못했다. 지금처럼 광매체가 발달된 것도 아니고, 당시 제한되어 있던 국내 음악 여건상 Kick Axe가 알려지는 데에는 다소간의 무리가 있었다. 하지만, 전영혁의 라디오 프로그램을 통해 본작의 후속작 Welcome to the Club에 실려있던 Comin' After You가 록팬들의 관심을 ...
