이 2014년 캐나다에서 결성한 블랙메탈 밴드는 이전 Kult ov Azazel 과의 스플릿 Luciferian Vengeance를 통해 내게 처음으로 다가왔다.

사실 그 스플릿 앨범은 Idolatry보다는 Kult ov Azazel 때문에 구매한 것이었고 엄밀히 말해 구매 당시에 Idolatry는 그저 곁가지 정도의 생각이었다. 그러나 실제로 플레이 해 본 결과 정통파 블랙메탈로 승부하는 두 밴드 모두 발군의 기량이었고 Idolatry는 당시 그래도 네임벨류가 훨씬 높은 Kult ov Azazel에 전혀 밀리지 않는 확고한 사운드를 보여주어서 꽤 인상 깊었다.

이제 다시 풀렝스(2016년 1집)로 만난 Idolatry는 더욱 발전하여 일종의 '완성형 로우블랙메탈'의 표본과도 같은 사운드를 보여주고 있다. 지독하게 사악한 보컬과 더불어 확고한 거칠음과 속도전, 그리고 단순함을 깨기 위해 다양한 보컬의 묘사와 여러 세션의 차용 등은 폭력적인 사운드 속에 드러나는 선명한 멜로디와 더불어 '그래, 로우 블랙메탈이 전화할 거라면 이렇게 진화했어야 했지...'같은 주억거림을 일으킨다. (gorgoroth는 반성할지어다.)

어찌보면 로우보다는 정통 블랙메탈이라 해도 좋을 것이다. 물론 다양한 파생장르가 골치아픈 블랙메탈이지만 이런 거칠음(로우함), 속도전, 선명한 멜로디와 휘몰아치는 듯한 프로듀싱, 절규 ... See More
