보통 Melodic Death Metal의 시작을 알린 앨범으로 At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, In Flames를 거론한다. 이 세 밴드는 지금까지도 장르를 개척한 선구자로서 추앙받고 있다. 그러나 이렇게 온갖 스포트라이트를 받는 1군이 있다면, 당연히 주목 받지 못하는 2군이 있는 것도 당연하다. Gates of Ishtar는 바로 2군에 속하는 밴드이다. 물론 이들의 음악은 아무리 높게 쳐줘도 위에서 언급한 세 밴드들만 못하다. 그렇다고 해서 이들 음악이 매력이 없느냐 하면 그것도 아니다. Gates of Ishtar 역시 멜로딕 데스 메탈 공식을 그대로 따르고 있다. Thrash Metal 리프 위에 귀에 잘 들어오는 멜로디를 얹은 이들의 방식은 At the Gates가 시작한 그 방식에서 조금도 벗어나 있지 않다. 문제는 너무 틀에 박혀있어서 새롭다는 느낌이 전혀 들지 않는다는 점이다. 뛰어난 밴드가 반드시 가져야 할 요건은 많이 있겠지만, 그 중에 하나인 강력한 오리지널리티를 이 밴드는 지니고 있지 않다. 이러한 단점은 이후의 나오는 앨범에서도 극복되지 못했다. 결국 3집을 발표하고나서 밴드는 좌초되고 말았지만 Gates of Ishtar는 초기 멜로딕 데스 메탈씬을 지탱하던 밴드 중 하나였다. 현재 멜로딕 데스씬에 횡행하는 모던한 멜로디의 데스 메탈에 질렸다면 이들의 앨범을 들어보는 것을 ... podarený debut v štýle Melodického Death Metal -u, spev (rev) je orientovaný skôr na black, ale je celkom kvalitný oproti niektorým growlerom. Hudba plynie v rýchlom, avšak nie monotónnom tempe bicích s gitarovými vyhrávkami a kvalitným zvukom

스웨덴이나 핀란드의 멜로딕데스를 별로 좋아하지않지만 90년대 중반기의 그 사운드의 탄생에 있어서 일조한 밴드의 앨범들은 충분히 들을만한 가치가 있다. 마치 정통메틀적인 부분까지 보이는...스웨덴 멜로딕데스 초기의 명작으로 본다.
