Crystal Viper의 변화는 내가 바라는 방향으로 흘러가지는 않았다. 데뷔 앨범만 해도 이들이 정통 Heavy Metal을 지향했음은 명백하다. 그러나 The Curse of Crystal Viper에 이은 후속작 Metal Nation에서 이미 밴드는 헤비 메탈의 영역에서 슬금슬금 발을 뺐다. 그럼에도 이 앨범은 높은 퀄리티를 띤 작품이라서 불만을 가지기는커녕 나름의 만족감도 느낄 수 있었다. 그러나 아무리 이 앨범에 호의를 품더라도 개인적으로는 밴드가 데뷔 앨범에서 보여주었던 헤비 메탈의 노선으로 회귀하기를 원했다. Metal Nation의 뒤를 이은 Legends는 혹시나 하는 기대에서 들어봤지만, 결국 예상대로 전작보다 Melodic Power Metal적인 요소가 더 강해졌다. Metal Nation에서는 사운드의 균형추가 어느정도 넘어간 수준이었다면, Legends에서 Crystal Viper는 이제 완연한 파워 메탈 밴드로서 거듭났다. Legends는 여타 파워 메탈 밴드들이 만드는 작품들이 다들 그렇듯이 대차게 시원하게 달리며, 짜릿한 멜로디 라인이 잘 살아있는 앨범이다. 밴드의 변화가 썩 맘에 드는 것은 아니지만, 그래도 Legends가 평범한 수준의 작품은 아니라는 점은 다행스럽게 생각되는 바이다. 위에서 부정적인 뉘앙스로 글을 작성하기는 했지만, 작품 자체에만 초점을 맞춘다면 이 앨범은 분명 수작임에 틀림 ...
