Bolt Thrower has been putting out Death Metal since the very early days of the genre, and though the debut was a bit rough, all of their releases have had a very consistent level of quality without doing anything too dangerous. Insanely heavy, crunchy guitars and classic OSDM riffage is the name of their game and they win every time.
The IVth Crusade is to Bolt Thrower as South of Heaven was to Slayer. The band slows down a bit, even including a few tracks that could qualify as Death Doom (except it just sounds like slow Death Metal), and focus a bit more on melody. That’s not to say this album isn’t packed with energy though, as many of the tracks are still loaded with double bass drumming and tremolo riffs.
There’s very martial feel to this album. Bolt Thrower has always written about war and battle, but the midtempo pace and march-like rhythm section really seals the atmosphere here. Again, this album isn’t doing anything new, it’s just executing OSDM incredibly well, and makes for an awesome listen front to back. Couldn’t ask for more from this legendary band.

Solemn Death Metal, But Never Boring!!!
미국과 영국은 영어란 동일한 언어를 쓰고 있는 국가이며 Anglo-Saxon 이란 근원을 가진 비슷한 점이 많은 국가이지만 분리된 400여년이란 시간 때문에 많은 문화적 차이를 보여주고 있다. Death Metal 에서도 비슷한 양상을 보여주고 있다. 일단 미국은 대륙국가의 위용답게 호방하며 인디언 살육을 통한 영토확장의 역사적 기질 때문에 악랄하고 잔인한 면이 적지않다. 하지만 영국은 유럽이란 대륙에 속해 있는 국가이며 가톨릭을 국교로 하기 때문에 약간 종교적인 색채가 묻어난다. 그렇다고 친종교적인 내용이 아닌 종교를 해악하는 경향이 강하다 하겠다.
Bolt Thrower 의 본작 The IVth Crusade 는 그런 의미에서 가장 유럽적인 Death Metal 음반이 아닌가 싶다. 십자군 전쟁이란 가톨릭의 어두운 역사를 주제로 하여 Death Metal 에서의 죽음 보다 더욱 파멸로 치닫는 암울함을 잘 표현하였다. 그 암울함을 낮고 반복적인 리프로 표현하고 드럼의 완급조절로 속도를 조절하는데 그 장중한 암울함이 전혀 지루하지 않다는 게 본작의 큰 장점이다.
또한 동방과의 거리가 가까운 유럽의 지리적 특성 때문인가 약간의 Oriental 적인 멜로디가 채용되어 비밀스러운 느낌까지 풍긴다.

This album is my the most favourite album in the Bolt Thrower's career. Some may say that this album sounds somewhat formulaic. But, the immersive slow pace and repetitive guitar works are evocative of doom and stoner metal influences, giving you the delusional hallucination that you are the warrior in the IVth Crusade.

앨범커버에서 이미 수준높은 퀄리티를 예고하고 있습니다. 느릿느릿 무게감있게 진행하며 시기를 보고 적당히 달려주다가 또 고삐를 잡고 다시 시동걸고, 이 반복이 묘한 긴장감을 만들어 냅니다. Realm of Chaos에서 박력있게 질주해준 덕분에, 느리게 걸었던 다음작 War Master가 몇 배는 지루하게 느껴졌는데, 본작은 아직도 느리게 걷고 있으나 지루하지는 않습니다.

이들을 처음 접한 앨범. 리프와 가끔 터지는 멜로디에서 진한 묵직함과 깊이가 느껴진다. 이 앨범에서 가장 큰 장점으로 생각 되는것은 '이해하기 쉬운 심플함'. 단순하고 직선적이지만 장르에서 보여줄 수 있는 미덕을 잘 보여주는 멋진 앨범.

스타일을 바꾸면서 전체적으로 단조로워지거나 지루해진 감이 없지 아니는 있지만 특색있는 리프들과 볼트 쓰로워 특유의 육중한 리프, 세기말적인 분위기를 잘 살린 감이 있어 자주 찾아듣게 됩니다.

개인적으로 Those Once Loyal보다 훨 나았다. 전체적으로 빠르게 달리진 않지만 육중한 기타리프가 정말 마음에 든다.

이 밴드는 정말로 짚고 넘어갈만하다. 타이틀 만치 리프나 솔로에서 아라베스크적인 부분을 보여주기도 하고, 전체적으로 이들이 보유하고 있는 중량감은 그대로이다. 2집에 비해서 좀 더 에픽적인 부분이 느껴진다. 상당한 수작.
