Virgin Steele의 데뷔 앨범은 실망스러운 퀄리티를 담고 있었다. 보통 Virgin Steele 할 때 연상되는 심포닉 사운드나 유기적인 컨셉, Power Metal 멜로디 모든 부문에서 실망감을 감출 수 없었다. 하지만, 후속작에서 Virgin Steele은 전작이 무색할 정도로 멋지게 환골탈태했다. 데뷔 앨범을 발표한지 불과 1년도 안 되는 사이에 밴드는 장족의 발전을 이루었던 것이다. 후속작 Guardians of the Flame 위에서 언급했던, 전작에서는 볼 수 없었던 Virgin Steele 고유의 특질들이 모두 담겨있다. 키보드는 심포닉한 분위기를 조성하는데 주축 역할을 맡고 있으며, 기타가 만들어내는 파워 메탈적인 선율은 요즈음의 유러피언 파워 메탈에 비하면 다소 심심하게 들릴 법도 하지만 들으면 들을수록 담백한 맛이 난다. 초기 Iron Maiden느낌이 나는 베이스와 드럼은 작품의 기저에서 탄탄한 리듬라인으로 기타와 키보드를 든든하게 받쳐주고 있다. myslím si, že na dobu vydania je "Guardians of the Flame" celkom podarené Heavy Metal -ové album. Zvuk gitár mohol byť o niečo tvrdší, ale hudobné nápady sú podarené.
