데뷔 앨범으로 어느정도 성공을 거둔 Gary Hughes은 역량이 최고조에 이르러 있을 때 시간을 낭비하지 않았다. 영국과 일본 팬들이 보여준 호의적인 반응에 고무된 그는 바로 후속작 제작에 매달렸다. 그리고 오래지 않아 자신의 커리어에서 가장 빛나게 될 명반을 발표했다. Name of the Rose는 아마도 역사상 가장 위대한 AOR 앨범일 것이다. Gary Hughes가 본격적으로 음악활동을 시작했을 때 이미 AOR은 뉘엿뉘엿 지는 해나 다름없는 장르였지만, 그 지점에서 그는 가장 위대한 걸작을 만들어낸 것이었다. Name of the Rose는 가장 거대한 대중 음악 소비시장인 미국에서는 이렇다할 반향을 일으키지는 못했다. 대신에 영국과 일본 팬들은 매우 호의적인 반응을 보이면서 밴드를 환영했다. 앨범에 실린 곡들은 전반적으로 좋은 반응을 얻었지만, 가장 주목 받은 곡은 역시 셀프 타이틀 트랙이었다. 일 년도 채 지나기 전에 내놓은 두 번째 작품으로 당시 국내에도 라이센스로 발매되었다. 명곡 "The Name of the Rose"의 애잔한 어쿠스틱 기타로 포문을 여는 앨범으로 멜로디, 구성력 등의 면에서 데뷔작보다 뛰어난 모습을 보여준다. 한층, 하드한 작법이 이루어지고 있으며 애상적인 연주는 더욱 농도가 짙어졌다. 감미롭고 감수성 짙은 연주에 Gary Hughes의 중후한 보컬을 들을 수 있는 명반으로 Melodic Hard Rock의 바이블로 손색이 없다. Ten의 인기는 특히 일본에서 절정을 이루는데, Burrn! 지의 1996년 독자투표에서 타이틀곡이 올해의 Song 1위, 본작이 Album 3위, 그리고 데뷔작이 Album 5위를 기록하기도 하였다. 데뷔작과 마찬가지로 게리 휴즈와 Mike Stone의 공동 프로듀싱으로 완성되었다.

AOR 명반을 꼽으라면 꼭 들어가지 않을까

The Name Of The Rose는 본작에서 최고 명곡으로 생각한다. 종종 아는 형이랑 술먹으러 LP바 가면 항상 듣는 곡이다. 그 외에 곡들도 물론 개좋다. 근데 길이가 길이인지라 뒤로 갈수록 지치는 경향은 있다.

ten앨범 중 제일 명반!! 가장 많이 들은 트랙은 역시나 1번 트랙과 6번 그리고 1번 트랙과 더불어 이 앨범의 가장 명곡이라 느껴지는 9번을 추천합니다!
