밴드의 다섯 번째 앨범인 Born in America이후 한동안 휴지기를 가졌던 Riot는 Thundersteel로 메탈씬에 복귀했다. Power Metal 사운드로 무장한 이 앨범은 당시의 메탈 팬들에게 Riot의 존재를 크게 어필했다. 데뷔 이래로 미국 메탈 팬들로부터 변변한 관심조차 받아본 적이 없었던 밴드는 Thundersteel로 Heavy Metal 팬들로부터 러브콜을 받은 것이었다. 이러한 관심에 고무되었던 것일까, Riot는 한번 더 자신들의 음악에 변화를 주었다. 밴드는 Thundersteel의 후속작에서는 실험적인 요소를 가미했다. The Privilege of Power는 프로그레시브적인 성향이 짙은 컨셉을 지향하고 있다. 그래서 그런지 이 앨범은 전작보다 듣기 사나워진 부분이 있다. 전작인 Thundersteel의 강점은 강력한 파워와 스피드, 간결함에 있었다. 호쾌한 힘이 느껴지는 파워 메탈은 청자에게 가슴이 뻥 뚫리는 듯한 쾌감을 선사했다. 그러나 후속작인 The Privilege of Power에서는 그러한 에너지가 그다지 느껴지지 않는다. 밴드는 여러가지 요소들을 앨범에 담아냈지만, 그러한 요소들은 군더더기처럼 느껴지는 부분이 없지않아 있다. 이 앨범은 마치 음식점에 들어가서 주문을 했는데, 그 음식이 내가 기대하고 있던 맛을 내고 있지 않는 듯한 그런 모양새를 내고 있다. 그러나 이러한 내 개인적인 ... This album offers fast riffs in style of Speed/Heavy Metal & most excellent vocals by Tony Moore. Moore is often regarded as one of Riot's finest, if not the best one they ever had. It’s a long album, but there’s never a single boring moment on it. What may be for someone bit unnerving is, that there are little interludes between each song.

Sure, the overly long samples were a mistake... but everything else about this album rocks! Horn section adds a great touch, and tracks like Dance of Death and Black Leather and Glittering Steel are some of the best Speed Metal anthems to date. Judas Priest took influence from this!
