Burn My Eyes는 The More Things Change...에서 Machine Head는 Thrash Metal과 Pantera식의 Groove Metal의 유산을 취합한 음악을 들려주었다. 이러한 성향 덕에 밴드를 비판적인 시각으로 바라보던 메탈 팬들에게서 오리지널리티가 없다는 혹평을 들어왔지만, 이들이 좋은 작품 활동을 보였던 것은 분명했다. 하지만 세 번째 앨범에서 밴드는 갑작스러운 변화를 시도한다. 90년대 말에는 Nu Metal이라는 새로운 사조가 유행하기 시작하는데, Machine Head는 The Burning Red에서 이 장르를 적극적으로 활용했다. 비교적 최근에 탄생한 그루브 메탈보다도 더 현대적인 색체를 띤 이 조류는 기성 메탈 팬들에게는 이질적으로 다가왔다. 그결과 이 앨범에 대한 호불호는 극명하게 갈리게 되었다. 개인적으로 앨범에 대한 평가는 호쪽으로 기울고 있지만, The Burning Red에 대해 메탈러들이 보내는 비난의 눈초리도 이해가 안가는 것은 아니다. 뉴메탈을 헤비 메탈의 범주에 넣느냐는 분명 논의가 필요한 부분이지만, 뉴메탈을 인정하지 않는 사람들에게 이 앨범은 Machine Head의 탈선으로밖에 비치지 않을 것이다. 실제로 데뷔 앨범과 두 번째 앨범은 좋은데, 그 뒤부터는 별로라는 사람도 상당히 많이 있다. 하지만, 그러한 부정적인 반응들이 밴드의 몰락을 재촉하지는 않았다. ... it´s alright. overrated band overall. but i have to say that "from this day" was a banger!

Bands that turned nu metal and then turned back - it sounds like some annoying YouTube short. I find this one so-so. Actually, the most nu metal riffing and rhythms are the most enjoyable part. The vocals, however, get weak here & there and sometimes are really embarrassing butt rock style. I think I liked track 7 the most.

From This Day를 제외하고 특별할 것이 없는 Machine Head의 가장 평범한 작품. 상업적 성공을 이끈 앨범이지만 사 놓은 CD가 어디있는지 신경도 쓰지 않을만큼 매력이 없다.
