New Wave of American Heavy Metal, 일명(NWOAHM)의 등장은 90년대 중반부터였다. 그러한 흐름이 본격적으로 가시화되기 시작한 시점은 2천년대로 잡아야 할 것이다. 이들 밴드들은 기성 Heavy Metal이 대중음악의 가장 큰 시장인 미국에서 몸을 사릴 무렵, 메인스트림에 차츰 영향을 행사하기 시작했다. 2천년대에 접어들어 몇몇 대형 밴드들의 성공과 함께 새로운 헤비 메탈은 그 나름의 시장을 개척할 수 있었다. 그러나 이 장르는 정통 헤비 메탈 사운드와의 괴리로 기성 헤비 메탈 팬들 중에는 NWOAHM 밴드들을 싫어하는 이들은 상당히 많다. 개인적으로도 NWOAHM에 대해서는 별다른 호감이 없다. 그다지 관심없는 장르임에도 꾸준히 듣는 편인데, 그 이유는 이 장르가 가장 미래지향적인 모습을 보이고 있기 때문이다. 실제로 헤비 메탈이라는 카테고리에 머물러 있으면서 앞으로도 발전 가능성이 가장높은 장르는 Metalcore나 Groove Metal, Nu Metal이라고 본다. 그러한 근거는 역시 상업성에 있다. 대중 음악 좀 듣는 사람들 중에는 종종 대중성을 무시하는 사람들이 있는데, 결국 살아남는 음악은 가장 많은 사람들이 듣는 음악이다. 그러한 점을 관찰했을 때, 뉴 메탈과 메탈코어가 중핵을 이루고 있는 NWOAHM은 여타 헤비 메탈의 하위 장르에 비해 월등히 우 ... It's the band that doesn't want to be called nu metal, and their first album is nu metal. Also it's a very solid album with highlights and interesting changes of pace here & there. Pretty good.
