앞서 발표한 네 장의 앨범을 통해 Blind Guardian은 Helloween의 아류라는 오명을 영구히 불식시켰다. 밴드는 중세미를 두른 Melodic Power Metal로 뚜렷한 아이덴티티를 확립했고, 팬들은 여기에 대한 화답으로 Blind Guardian을 유로피언 파워 메탈씬을 지탱하는 축으로 확고히 인식하기 시작했다. 이렇게 유럽 메탈씬의 중핵으로 떠오른 Blind Guardian은 제반여건이 우호적인 상황에서 라이브 앨범을 발매하게 되었다. Blind Guardian이 본 라이브 앨범을 이시기에 발표하는 것은 아마도 여러가지 목적이 있다고 봐야할 것이다. 먼저 라이브에서 자신들의 역량을 증명하는 것이 그 핵심일 것이며, 거기에 겸해서 다사다난했던 밴드의 디스코그래피를 정리하는 것도 부수적인 목적이었을 것이다. 그리고 이 앨범은 도쿄에서의 공연을 실은 것인데, 이는 밴드를 지지하는 팬들이 많았던 일본을 의식한 제스처라고 생각된다. 이웃나라 입장에서는 정말 부러운 노릇이 아닐 수 없다.

위에서 언급한 목적들은 Tokyo Tales을 통해 완벽하게 성취되었다. 라이브 무대에서 Blind Guardian은 그 실력을 멋지게 입증했다. 초기 앨범들의 다소 빈약한 레코딩을 생각해봤을 때, 라이브는 확실히 우월한 작품로밖에 보이지 않는다. 이러한 혜택을 가장 많이 입은 곡들은 단연 Battalions of Fear와 Follow the Blind에 실려있는 곡들이었다. 특히 데뷔 앨범은 덜여문 밴드의 기량과 부실한 프로덕션이 겹쳐 아쉬운 작품이었는데, Tokyo Tales는 그와같은 아쉬움을 말끔히 날려버힌다. Battalions of Fear을 처음 들을 때 Majesty만큼은 뛰어난 곡이라고 생각하고 있었는데, 이곡은 거의 환골탈태 수준으로 거듭났다. 후속작 Follow the Blind에 수록되어있던 곡들도 구원받기는 마찬가지였다. Banish from Sanctuary와 Valhalla 역시 몰라보게 달라져서 밴드의 초기 두 작품을 다시 돌아보게 되었다.

초기작들의 달라진 면모도 놀랍지만, 그래도 이 앨범의 등뼈는 엄연히 Tales from the Twilight World와 Somewhere Far Beyond에 수록된 곡들이다. 두 앨범의 곡들이 Tokyo Tales의 주축을 이루고 있는데, 그 퀄리티는 정규 앨범을 훨씬 능가하고 있다. 좀더 타이트하고 매끈하게 녹음된 밴드의 곡들은 Blind Guardian에 대한 개인적인 애정을 좀더 확고하게 해주었다. 여기에 적정한 타이밍에 코러스까지 넣어주는 일본 팬들의 열렬한 호응은 이 라이브 앨범의 가치를 격상시켰다. Journey Through the Dark와 Traveler in Time, Goodbye My Friend, Welcome to Dying 같은 Blind Guardian의 초기 디스코그래피를 빛내는 명곡들은 정규 앨범 버전을 무색하게 할 정도로 멋진 퀄리티를 자랑하고 있다. 파워 메탈 라이브 앨범 중에서 이 앨범에 필적할 만한 라이브는 아마 손에 꼽을 수 있을 것이다.

Tokyo Tales을 마지막으로 Blind Guardian은 변화를 맞이하게 된다. 그동안 밴드는 데뷔 앨범부터 Kalle Trapp이 주욱 프로듀싱을 담당해왔다. 개인적으로 그가 참여했던 작품들의 프로듀싱은 전반적으로 썩 마음에 들었던 것은 아니지만, Blind Guardian의 초창기에 중세미를 가미한 사운드를 주조해내는데 그가 큰 기여를 했던 것은 엄연한 사실이다. 그는 Tokyo Tales까지 Blind Guardian의 프로듀싱 작업을 담당했는데, 그가 작업한 결과물 중에서는 본작이 가장 괜찮은 퀄러티를 띠고 있다. 이는 시작은 그리 좋았다고 할 수 없으나, 유종의 미를 거두었다고 해야할 것이다. 이후 Blind Guardian의 프로듀싱을 맡게 되는 인물은 거물 밴드 Metallica와 함께 했던 Flemming Rasmussen이다. 이제 막 활개를 치려는 Blind Guardian에게는 제격인 인물이었다. 이후 후속작 Imaginations from the Other Side부터 밴드의 작품은 좀더 화려하고 밀도높은 사운드를 지향하게 되면서 Blind Guardian의 본격적인 전성기가 개막하게 된다. ... 블라인드 가디언은 확실히 스튜디오 앨범보다 라이브가 훨씬 매력적인 밴드. 때창과 연주의 조화는 관객과 함께 만들어가는 음악이 무엇인가를 제대로 들려줌. Somewhere Far Beyond까지의 초기 곡들만 수록되어 있는 것은 아쉽지만, 현장감은 블가의 라이브 앨범들 가운데 최고이기에 가장 추천할만한 라이브.

초창기 멜로딕 파워메탈 라이브 명반. 관중과의 호흡등도 무척 괜찮고 동시대 헬로윈의 아기자기한 키퍼스 라이브 앨범과는 다르게 힘으로 밀어붙이는 라이브앨범. Banish from Sanctuary부터 압도적이다.
