Space Rock/Opera Rock의 걸작 The Human Equation 이후 Ayreon이 어떤 작품을 발표할지 메탈 팬들은 상당히 궁금해했다. 전작은 록 오페라로서나, 컨셉 앨범으로서의 완성도는 비교할 만한 작품이 없을 정도로 완벽했기 때문이다. The Human Equation의 후속작은 걸작의 뒤를 이은 작품이라는 부담을 과연 떨쳐낼 수 있을지가 팬들의 관심사였다. 결과적으로 Ayreon은 The Human Equation에 비해 뒤지지 않는 앨범을 발표함으로써 팬들의 높은 관심에 답했다. Arjen Lucassen은 또다시 자신의 재능을 멋지게 증명한 것이었다. 전체적으로 01011001은 전작의 연장선상에 있다. 아니, 엄밀히 말해서 Into the Electric Castle에서부터 완전히 정립된 록 오페라의 양식미와 응집력 높은 컨셉 노선을 고스란히 이어받았다. 기술 진보가 극한에 다다른 시대에 이르러, 기계에 전적으로 의존하기만 하는 인간이 부활하는 내용을 다룬 앨범의 스토리는 컨셉의 응집도에서 전작 The Human Equation에 조금도 뒤지지 않는다. 앨범의 긴 시간으로 인해 상당한 인내심이 필요하기는 하지만, 여러 밴드의 유명한 아티스트의 참여와 Arjen Lucassen이 들려주는 장대한 이야기에 귀를 기울이다 보면 1시간 40분이라는 다소 긴 시간도 금방 지나가고 만다. 프로그레시브 메탈 팬이라면 반드시 들어봐야 할 ...
