Heavy Metal을 들은 지 어언 15년 가까이 지났지만, 80년대 독일 메탈은 거의 아는 바가 없었다. 90년대야 Helloween이나 Gamma Ray나, Edguy를 비롯한 Power Metal을 귀에 달고 살았지만, 전시대의 독일 메탈에 대해서는 헤비 메탈을 들은 경력이 무색할 정도로 깜깜했다. 근자에 Running Wild나 Scanner, Sodom 등 80년대 독일 메탈의 중진들을 본격적으로 듣기 시작하면서 차츰차츰 듣는 재미를 느끼고 있다. 이런 독일 메탈의 미시 세계를 탐사하던 중에 발견한 밴드 하나가 Angel Dust였다. 이들의 데뷔 앨범 Into the Dark Past는 여러모로 Running Wild나 Helloween의 초기 모습을 연상케 한다. 파워 메탈과 Thrash Metal의 경계에 있는 이들의 스타일은 당대 아메리칸 스래쉬나 USPM과는 뚜렷한 차이를 보이고 있는 독일 메탈 특유의 양식미를 확인할 수 있다. 거칠게 달리는 스래쉬 메탈 위에 호방한 멜로디가 서려있는 이들의 스타일에서는 이후 유럽을 호령할 European Power Metal의 도래를 예언하는 것 같다. 하지만, 이들은 위에서 언급한 Running Wild, Helloween과는 명암이 갈리고 만다. 애석하게도 이들은 Helloween이 Keeper시리즈로 파워 메탈의 역사를 쓰고 Running Wild가 Death or Glory로 영광스러운 시기를 보내고 있을 때 Angel Dust는 내부 갈등으로 해체하고 만다.

Angel Dust was formed 1984, but never got the attention and respect they truly deserved. "Into the Dark Past" album contains great Speed/Thrash Metal. After the intro, the fast guitar riffs comes with some killer solos, overall both guitarists make for a excellent guitar work. Drums are very fast on this album and gruff vocal completed the whole album.

The musicianship is phenomenal. It's far less evil sounding than most Thrash, with liberal Speed Metal influence, but the riffs are just so good. Not a single song without constantly solid music.

2세대 정도의 올드스쿨 저먼 스레쉬 밴드로 출발한다. 쿵짝쿵짝 흥겨운 리듬감이 경쾌하지만 차별화된 매력 포인트를 찾기는 조금 어렵다. 정겨운 멜로디의 4번이 즐겁다.
