Bathory는 1983년 Quarthon에 의해 결성된 스웨덴 출신의 밴드로 Venom과 함께 익스트림 뮤직씬을 개척한 선구자로 추앙받고 있다. Mayhem, Marduk등에 의해 본격적인 Black Metal의 번성이 이루어지기 훨씬 전에 이런 사운드를 선보였다는 것만으로도 놀라운 앨범으로 당시 많은 추종자를 거느렸다고 전해지는 이들의 이름을 널리 알린 문제작이다. Under The Sign Of The Black Mark는 이들의 정규 세 번째 작품으로 이후 전성기를 맞게되는 북유럽 메틀의 꿈틀거리는 기운을 느낄 수 있는 원초적인 블랙메틀 앨범이다.
