| 1998년 바로크/네오클래시컬 메탈의 선구자 잉베이 맘스틴의 꿈이 이루어졌다. 1984년 24세의 젊은 나이에 밴드 Rising Force를 결성하며 혜성처럼 등장했던 이 시대 최고의 속주 기타리스트인 잉베이는 당시에 '언젠가 반드시 오케스트라와 협연을 할 것이다' 라는 말을 했다. 사실 Rising Force에서 보여준 그의 테크닉은 당시 그 어떤 기타리스트도 함부로 흉내낼 수 없는 것이었고, 이후 Chris Impellitteri가 등장하기 전까지 그의 클래식컬한 속주는 메탈계에서 항상 빛을 발했다. (사실 Impellitteri도 데뷔 앨범을 제외하고는 그다지 큰 빛을 보지 못했고, 평론가들도 잉베이와 그를 비교할 때 함부로 Impellitteri가 더 뛰어나다고 말하지 못했다.) 스웨덴 출생인 Yngwie는 3살 때부터 피아노를 치고 5살 때 기타를 잡았으며, 7살 때 Jimi Hendrix가 생전에 기타를 불사르는 장면을 TV에서 보고 그를 목표로 피나는 연습을 했다. Ritchie Blackmore 의 곡을 거의 모두 카피하며 실력을 쌓은 그는 이미 10대 초반에 밴드를 결성하였으며 Graham Bonnet과 함께 Alcatrazz를 결성할 당시에는 이미 스웨덴 내에서 적수를 찾아볼 수 없는 기타천재로 알려졌다. 그러나 Rising Force 해산 이후 그의 밴드는 그리 큰 성공을 거두었다고 할 수는 없다. 게다가 이혼, 교통사고 등 사생활 면에서 크고 작은 불운이 겹쳤으며 이로 인해 그는 정신적으로도 큰 고통을 겪었다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 거장의 피는 죽지 않았던 것이다. 세계 최정상급의 하모니를 자랑하는 체코 필하모닉 오케스트라와 엮은 본 협연 음반은 타이틀 그대로 '기타를 위한' Suite - 모음집이다. 잉베이는 이 음반에서 자신이 영향 받았던 모든 거장들 (J.S.Bach, W.A.Mozart, A.Vivaldi)의 영감을 유감없이 발휘하며, 물론 이러한 멜로디는 그의 화려한 속주로 나타난다. 잉베이가 말하고 싶은 것은, 다른 현악기들과 마찬가지로 기타 또한 오케스트레이션의 한 부분이 되어 협주곡을 펼칠 수 있다는 것이다. |
